With SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) simplifies the process of enterprise data protection and backups.
Backing up data and syncing applications have become commonplace in our lives — but not without significant effort. Living in the era of virtual computing means that data is more accessible than ever, but it’s also increasingly difficult to monitor, manage, and protect sensitive information across complex network environments. To help enterprises better protect their data against loss and cybercrime, HPE SimpliVity offers a range of powerful features.
Prior to the 1990s and the rise of the virtual computing era, the client-server architecture was the dominant one. As such, the traditional or periodic backup (B/R) method of saving data (built for disk-based systems) reigned supreme. Third-party recovery software with on-site storage, a 24-hour recovery point objective (RPO) and a 24-hour recovery time objective (RTO) was the norm. Naturally, this arrangement carries some fairly critical implications when it comes to data protection.
With traditional backup methods, if anything should happen to the data storage site — human error, hacking, or a natural disaster — the backup will be destroyed. As cybersecurity threats become more sophisticated, the disadvantages of the client-server architecture leave users increasingly vulnerable to critical data loss.
Methods of data storage and data protection are advancing in tandem with technology, but there’s still plenty of improvement to be had. Snapshots and mirrors offer a significantly reduced RPO — as little as an hour — but they cannot survive site failure. Mirrors can be configured to alternate between different arrays and sites, but these processes are still typically conducted periodically — every 12 hours or so — and require the attention of full-time network admins. Beyond that, neither mirrors nor snapshots have been able to replace periodic B/R because they cannot provide the full data backup capabilities that enterprises need.
Full data backup is much better equipped for handling the storage and security needs of virtual computing. Instead of backing up only at select intervals, all existing data is continually stored and compounded upon. Nothing is excluded or deleted for the sake of space, and having copies ensures no data falls through the cracks. A full data backup, in short, aligns perfectly with the needs of the virtual computing era.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s SimpliVity platform revolutionizes how users can back up their data by using a hyperconverged system. In a hyperconverged system, compute, storage, and networking resources are controlled by one data center management platform and a hypervisor. Full data backups are handled within the infrastructure itself and data can be effectively managed from any location.
Hyperconverged infrastructure automates data protection by making it an integral part of every process, improving data protection and simplifying day-to-day maintenance. They offer seamless backup protection and disaster recovery software with the speed and RTO/RPO of snapshots — a blazing-fast 60 seconds on average to backup or recover a 1 TB VM. SimpliVity also eliminates the need for external backup software along with the manpower needed to monitor periodic data backups.
An International Data Corporation survey of HPE SimpliVity users revealed that the platform reduced the amount of time spent on backing up by 31.6 percent. If a company with only two full-time administrators used SimpliVity, it would find itself with 1,315 FTE hours of additional time left over at the end of the year. The system also reduced costs by an incredible 69 percent.
The cybersecurity experts at Turn-key Technologies, Inc. (TTI) know that data protection must align with the way that enterprises work in today’s day and age. HPE’s hyperconverged infrastructure removes some of the burdens associated with backing up data by automating full data backups and making them part of standard IT operations. If your enterprise is considering taking advantage of full data backups with HPE SimpliVity, the expert team at TTI is here to help integrate SimpliVity into your network ecosystem and support your organization with planning, installation, and managed services.
